2021 and introducing my 4th new website with all the bells and whistles I could afford. Take some time to navigate through the menu and read what you may be interested in. We pulled in writings from at least 20 years back and four blog formats ago. Added a rivers page, updated most everything and streamlined the junk. With add on of social media and soon to be video we just might be considered up to date.
The Newsletter will be available for those that subscribe and for those willing to endure my rants we have this Blog. Kory went to great lengths organizing my rants so show him a look or two.
Check out the latest Hosted trips pages, these are definitely not for profit. So if your into going on a fishing vacation with a has been guide give it a go.
While your here take a gander at the guides and staff page there all professionals in the industry and work in pretty cool fisheries around the continent..
Fall Ramblings:
As Im packing for the 22nd Fall Steelhead guide season, I cant seem to shake the idea that it may be our last. I just read an article by Mia Shepard that sums up how we (as Steelheaders) should treat a low return of steelhead, it’s a great read and inspirational.
How will anglers react in the future is worrisome to me. Many are already shaming other anglers in social media platforms; will the cancel culture infect the basic “IDEA” of sport fishing? Will managers continue on a path of giving up to special interests and there often misplaced ideals?
In many past seasons we relish the thought of changing seasons with great optimism of how the run will go. Now with Dam fish counts it takes away from that feeling of “wonder” that’s being replaced by virtue signaling responses from every wannabe IG influencer on the west coast. I’m sure they go fishing anyway, on rivers now displaced from anglers that fear un- friending’s; the ones still wearing a mask on the river, that’s them!
What I hope is that anglers look into alternate fishing they have thought about or done in the past and go for it. Treat the low return in Fall 2021 as an opportunity to break out the Trout Spey, or the fall bass popper rod. Go fish a lake, the sound, a mountain stream. We must keep vigilant and eyes on the prize (HOME WATERS) or those runs will be taken away from the sports fishermen. The way of too MANY Washington river systems that never open again. We are leaning that way on the Elwha now. We closed a great wilderness trout fishery in the idea of wild Salmon and Steelhead recovery. With the hope of Salmon and steelhead retuning into pristine wilderness and we now have a lifetime science project and another Tribal only Fishery. If you look into the Puget Sound Rivers management you will find this same thing playing out, different but yet the same. Steelhead Science projects and Tribal only fishing on what is left of wild/hatchery runs. Sate brood stock hatcheries are all planned and waiting on funding, let’s hope those urban areas get some budget relief. Never forget the fish and the social benefits they offer every generation of society.
Enough of speculation and remorse..
Get to fishing! I’m scaled way back on fall steelhead and may not use a hook with a point. It won’t stop me from anticipating the take, the tug and drop or maybe even get a jump. I bought circle hooks to try and see what happens there too.
The Chinook runs look good and I assume a few of those will interrupt my swing. I rarely target Salmon but this season may be different, they will bite a swung fly and when they do there’s no mistaking it!
Im booking trout trips way into November on the Yakima this season and frankly look forward to more Trout Spey and doing a little Salmon Enhancement. We are getting back into tying flies the size of steelhead intruders but for the purpose of getting eaten by a trout, reminds me of my first Montana fall season so long ago.
My age old question; why won’t people that book a steelhead trip convert to a trout trip when they get blown out or like this season low predictions and possible closures? Some have had the date forever on the books and get infected by the numbers and rhetoric of special interest groups and just cancel. This makes no sense to me, as an angler, adapt and go fishing.
Reflecting the past and looking into the future
“OP” Spring 2021
Now 6 months after the expanded “No Boat fishing” regulation on the Olympic Peninsula, I have some ducks in a row. Going live with the new website I’m en to talk about it.
Well I loved last spring, we fished well, we had good enough weather to make a season out of it and plenty of fish were caught. Made new friends, bought new gear and swung flies every day of my season. The pressure was minimal up north and finding fish was definitely a new challenge for some. After all how many do you need? The PIN reel was a hoot, by the end of season we had converted some anglers to full Spey or from the fly bobber to the spin reel and float rod or straight to the PIN reel and float rod. Not one bobber on a fly pole all season,,, loved it. Our MO of swing a Spey and cast a float rod daily proved to be effective and nobody drowned.
It was weird not fishing in April; I live for April Steelhead fishing. In the past most anglers go away and the fish run in fast and don’t stay long either. Water temps are perfect and so on and so on..
My new MO is I’m swinging flies every day with whomever on the client list willing. The guides on the list will take the float fishermen and so forth, I love it, no rush, just go fishing and stay away from the Hoh. I fear in years to come if we don’t get April back the runs will slowly become crowded and finding a spot will be an issue. But until then we trudge on with the easy pleasy second shift and enjoy the season and what GOD gives us for fish.
“OP” Spring 2022
Looking ahead at the outlook for spring steelhead in 2022 has us wondering. Are the recent salmon runs indicating better ocean survival? maybe. Whatever the season offered up we will be there and having a blast at it. January is the new February the runs seem to be moving earlier each spring. Take advantage of this as we may not have April to fish. The decision will be made in December 2021 by WDFW or by the special interest groups as in 2020. Open dates at the Wild Duc Lodge are few, day trips are available through out the season.
Xcalak Spring 2022
For many years now I have been chasing Permit in Mexico, with the Covid years behind us I am looking to return to Xcalak and to the X Flats lodge and my guide friends I’m hoping to see. Stay tuned as dates will be either April or May depending on Steelhead season.
