Yucatan Peninsula
Hosted Saltwater Flats Fishing
After fishing multiple places on the Yucatan in Mexico from Campeche to Belize, I’ve settled on this place where it all began. A quiet little town near the southern boarder of Mexico with Belize, XCALAK and the lodge with guides at Xflats.
What makes this place unique
It’s the location of the lodge and the people. The area has gotten a little more popular in the last ten years but frankly where hasn’t. The Town still has the same guides and a few new ones most of them I have fished with over the last dozen trips. All of which I call family and would not go there with out fishing with them. They are very kind and sociable the way we all have experience traveling to Mexico 30 years ago. All speak enough English or more than expected for sure.
I go with the expectations I will have the four guides I know and one extra that is new but phenomenal. We catch Bonefish , Permit, Barracuda, and baby Tarpon and everything on the reef my favorite alternate are the Jacks. Nearly every time we go one or two of the guests in our party catches a grand slam. Barracuda is often brought back for evening appetizers as cevitche!
One of the qualities that make this area so great is its geography. We have the Ocean side that is behind the reef for many miles north and much farther south than we can fish. The fact is it’s the second largest barrier reef on the planet. Then there’s the inside or Chetumal Bay which is absolutely huge and mostly undiscovered if your willing to run a little north up the inside. This gives us freedom to rome. Every season I fish a new place and am wanting to go farther. Best of all no long bouncy run to start and end the day.
A little research and experience has brought me to deciding on April or May as the best time for a well rounded trip. The trade winds are shifting to a lighter SE direction, this means it can blow from the ocean pushing fish through the reef. But mostly giving the outside (ocean side) a higher possibility of fishing on a multitude of species. The sun which is optimal for saltwater fishing is high in the sky and the heat of summer has not hit full power. It is this warmer water too that brings Permit to the beaches and the feeding is strong. There’s even a chance at Ocean side tarpon and the ever present bonefish and schools of Jacks.

Trip Itinerary & Details
Trip is scheduled for a Sunday arrival – Saturday departure at the Xflats lodge formerly Tierra Meya Lodge. Arrive in Cancun on a Saturday, meeting at “Courtyard By Marriot” by 10 AM on Sunday for shuttle to Xcalak. Or if your flight is that morning we can pick you up near that time at the airport or else ware. Fishing five days Monday through Friday departing early Saturday for Cancun Airport and flights back home.
I commonly rent a van for shuttle to and from the airport. This gives us a little freedom on the drive and while in Xcalak should anybody want to fish after hours, go into town etc..
I take groups of 8 to 12 anglers and we like to be flexible! Non angling spouses are welcome with room available..
As your host: I will provide a basic fly box of good selections and also offer up larger selections to purchase specifically for this trip as you wish to target species. I can fill in gaps of gear that you may not have and of course help in purchasing any gear needed. Manage the shuttle van, and drive us Xcalak.
The Courtyard by Marriot has a shuttle to there hotel going through the Cancun Airport and will pick you up for any additional nights prior or post of the scheduled trip. Many of us are coming from the Northwest and its a long day of travel to make it all the way to Xcalak in one day.
Upon arrival at Terra Maya/ XFlats we will have a meet and greet, happy hour and dinner around 6PM. following by a tutorial on the fishing and make plans for guides to pick up on dock.
Fish accordingly each day, adapt to conditions, tie flies, tell story, drink tequila, enjoy fantastic food and nightly stories and fishing tutelage.
Five days will fly by, we all get to fish with different guides, there all my favorites from the pool. I generally like to fish with each guest if possible. But good teams increase the enjoyment and success of the trip.
At the end, the last supper so to speak, we invite the guides to join us or sometimes they come early the next day for breakfast and talk about the goofy stuff and the week of fishing.
Our shuttle is planned early to drop the first departing guests to the Airport or hotel should they be departing much later for home from the Cancun air port.
